it was john and em's anniversary weekend ... they just had this one little photo session..free photo in your halloween costume...then they could get away from it all for a day or so. after all the "senior grandparents" would be in charge. as we walked downtown hibbing to the studio...we found a runaway hen in the picture window....and this was the line...at times out the door..but a good time had by all.


sunday we took the boys for an afternoon of park exploring on the range. this park: Keewatin Skate Board Park was rate as follows: Les 9/20 Harry 1/20 Holden 1/10...would have been better if they had skate boards eh?	then onto Keewatin Elementary school...where Holden found a good puddle to try his boats. This playground was rated Les 9/20, Harry 3/10, Holden 10/10

	later in the evening the boys wanted sparky, the dog to have some out of kennel time. knowing i wouldn't love the idea...this is what they arranged. sparky is behind the recyle bin...two chairs and a game begins. great weekend guys....

duluth, as good as a day can be

first you can never go wrong going to duluth. there is always something to do...and if you want to do nothing...that is fine. lake superior is there for the viewing. if you are bringing kids there is water and rocks...all seasons. now when we bring the lads to duluth they say things to me like...grandma do you have your walking stick? grandma be careful here it's slippery. grandma...maybe you should wear your hat here. so i'm not so sure who is watching who anymore but before the lads find women, beer and tv football...well we are having fun.

this is my favorite photo of the day. only because all three boys were so excited about the waves and the loud noise the waves were making. i only managed to catch holden's excitement here but all three were thrilled when we walked over the hill and saw the waves.

in the morning we went to the elusive, hard to find, but right on the map Enger Tower. the views were spectacular from the tower and viewing pavilion. then we headed to superior wi for a church lunch of soup and pie and then to WI point. then to chester park for a halloween event that included a maze, hayride and making cider. i'm fairly sure this was THE CIDER MAN of Duluth (grandpa flom note the john deere tractor on the hayride....). i'm not sure what the biggest hit of the day was for the lads...but tossing sticks into chester creek and following them downstream had to be on the list. photos here

Thursday at work, while doing a mountain of database changes, with headphones, Iphone and Pandora radio I listened to my Alison Krauss station. At least three times during the day I heard James Taylor’s “going to Carolina in my mind.” It is fall, my season for contemplation. If you are looking for me…I am here or here.

hwy 95 revisited

holden and leslie were here on saturday. nothing like a visit from the grandsons for me to fire up the jeep and say let's go exploring. we took grandpa and their dad, john along for the ride. my plans were to get up early and stop and see the best along hwy 95. perhaps a late start, too many adults...whatever...we didn't get everything "revisited" but we saw marine mill, tom's pumpkin patch and interstate park.

at the marine mill, all that remains are the ruins of a saw mill,overgrown with view of the st croix river...very peaceful.

we checked out the settler's cabin in marine, walked the main street, saw the farmers market setting up and then headed up to tom's pumpkin patch for the maze. mind you that children under 11 need to be accompanied by an adult..this is so adults find their way out of the place. lots of fun, lots of walking and well a little muddy. at no time did i have any clue where we were but thankful, the lads, who are good with the maze books...got us in and out safely.

then forward to interstate park for a tour with the naturalist for holden and leslie while we scouted the area for a picnic lunch. this has to be one of the most beautiful places in minnesota. the lads had lunch on top of a rock...enjoying seeing across the river to wisconsin.

just a beaut of a day.

4 boys - prefer grandfather, 3 grandsons

rocks (include bag for keeper rocks)

lake superior

state parks - gooseberry, split rock

1 wayside

1 town park

hot dogs & chips

get depth charge, dark roast at duluth caribou. head east (north). add 72 degree day, sunshine. if day is slightly foggy that is ok. stop at silver creek wayside for views;boys think for rocks. drive to day's far point, split rock state park. add perfect spot. boys stack rocks, toss rocks, collect rocks, climb rocks. cook hot dogs over fire. visit lighthouse. head back, stop at gooseberry. find parking. boys hunt tadpoles and rocks. add perfect spot. boys will add water. add stop at two harbors walk for final rocks. head home...red sunset, full moon.

wednesday nights, the city of stillwater mn has had a car show. nothing too big...sort of a good walk about memory lane of cars. don't you remember almost every family photo was in front of vehicle?

here are a couple classics...

yep almost every time i think of a childhood photo there is a car in it somewhere...so i just love the stillwater car show because it always reminds me of so many good things. each week i remember one more thing about the cars we grew up with...

Adventure Days...down to the depths of the earth

It was to be a summer adventure day with the law boys. Planned was a trip to nearby Mountain Iron MN (taconite capitol of US) to check out the 6 playgrounds, locomotive, scenic overlooks, then buy some groceries and head to West 2 Rivers Camping and Recreation for an afternoon of swimming, fishing, looking for rocks. But true to the up north is for the hardy folks, the city slicker grandparents who found themselves shivering in the wind and the rain, switched plans. So after a brief try at the day's plans we headed to Virginia MN for a McDonald's lunch (large coffee for grandmother) and we headed to the Soudan Underground Mine State Park. When we had visited the core library, they had suggested we visit. What an adventure! Arriving at 2...we couldn't take the underground tour until 3:30 so we had plenty of time to explore the exhibits, check out the trails and see people coming up from the mine shivering cold...all wearing hard hats. We were all a little nervous about riding 2,341 feet below the earth in an elevator shaft but we all bucked up, no one cried and down we went. While very dark it was very interesting to see how underground mining would have been...I don't think any of us are looking for underground mining careers. Back up...in daylight we headed back to Virginia MN to meet John....but not before we checked out the Laurentian Divide. Here marks where water travels north, versus to the sea. At another point near Chisholm,there is the three-way divide...north to Hudson Bay, east to Lake Superior, south to Mississippi. Very interesting!

Scenic Overlook Mountain Iron MN....that's MinnTac in the foreground...windmills on the ridge...ok so I can't take a good picture. Trust me...it's there!

Class S-4 Baldwin switcher 1910 steam locomotive weighing 82 tons, last used in Mountain Iron Open Pit in 1955...a great find...there was a bulldozer, steam shovel...the mesabi trail...all here!

where we live...has the best of times and memories. it's not often in life you know your neighbors...before you even build your house...or all of you build your house over a period of years. it's been a family bond of cleanup, moving, painting, rock moving. but by far over the years...the best has been lake shore cleanup. regardless of the season we'd find ourselves..a few hot dogs, a pop (or can of soda), and a good burn to visit and commiserate over. and so even though they gleefully moved to arizona a few years ago (after a "see the USA" trip or two)..one of the best summer visits is always when the kitts return to carnelian. the deys, always the social hosts, offered up their beach and the kitts brought the picnic...the deys brought the ambiance (table cloths, chairs, firewood)...and well the most i could think to bring was my iphone and my camera. so i am in charge of memories...here you go...

the fire, the food, the lake.

there never is any end to the discussion...everything is up for discussion...where on earth might i ask, can six people discuss religion, politics, local zoning ordinances, kids, vacations, houses, illness, house repair...until 2:30 AM? only here and only because we are lucky enough to really care and enjoy seeing each other briefly each year...we wish it could be more.

nancy brought smores, denny kept the fire going...jim kitts brought the best polish sausage, jo ann...queen of salads...kept us well feed...and on track...and nancy brought and shared the great Cub Foods steakhouse salad.

may you find great friendship...it is the best of the lake.

Good To Go - this explains me and coffee....

Ok we were driving home and I saw this on my coffee cup and I thought...this explains me and coffee and how much i like to wander...give me a cup of coffee and I'm good to go for miles. And yes...there are better coffees than this cup..but it's all about the adventure. Who knew it could so easily be explained on a coffee cup.

I love this tree. It has a limb out...sometimes it's saying to me ...thanks for visiting up north...come again. Sometimes it is saying...i could use a lift somewhere else. Other times it's a "howdy...welcome to the cities"...other times it says "things will be fine..don't worry." regardless...this white pine is one of my favorite trees...I wonder if anyone else gets as excited as I do to see it every time I drive home from up north!
